Sustainable IT level 2 certification
The Sustainable IT certification is aimed at organisations who are striving to reduce their digital impact. Level 2, the highest level, is awarded by an independent committee, to ensure it is even more demanding and transparent. Its main objectives are to improve purchasing policies, extend the life of equipment and shift towards the responsible design of digital services.
The certification is the result of a partnership between the Institut du Numérique Responsable, France IT and Agence LUCIE, supported by ADEME.
Three years – Renewable
Key figures
The share of greenhouse gas emissions which are due to the internet (i.e. 50% more than emissions from global air transport).
The number of electronic devices in the world, according to ADEME (of which between 70% and 90% do not enter into official recycling streams).
The quantity of chemical products required to manufacture a computer, in addition to 240kg of fuel and 1.5 T of water.

Focus on the impact of digital technology
While the digital world appears to be virtual, its impact is very real: the widespread extraction and use of raw materials, social impact and use of energy … So many consequences which are not always immediately apparent. What do you think has the biggest environmental impact? The extraction of resources and their transformation into electronic components. Next up is pollution associated with the end-of-life for these products: digital technology now represents between 3% and 4% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the world and 2.5% of the national carbon footprint of France (ARCEP 2023 study).

- Compulsory three-day training for at least one person; Your OPCO may cover this
- The cost of on-site audits (initial and monitoring), based on the number of staff and sites

The SIT 2 certification and its guidelines were designed to be accessible to all types of organisations regardless of size. This is a turnkey methodology to work on a serious process of continuous improvement and of reducing the impact of digital technology use.
SIT 2 certification falls neatly within a broader CSR approach and can respond to several regulatory requirements. It can showcase an advanced level of maturity on the subject.
The certification works on the basis of two key elements:
Guidelines:
The Responsible Digital Technology guidelines were drafted in 2018 by the Institut du Numérique Responsable in partnership with the Minister for the Ecological Transition, ADEME and WWF. They enable organisations to work towards reducing the social and environmental impact of their use of digital technology.

A multi-step certification process:
- Initial training (three days)
- Self-assessment
- An initial on-site audit including an interview with internal and external stakeholders (minimum maturity score of 500/1,000 points required)
- Drafting an action plan (your commitments)
- Approval of your action plan by an external CSR committee of experts
- Award of the certification for three years
- An audit to monitor the action plan remotely 18 months after certification
